Google me!

Posted by liz on July 2, 2008

Do you use Google.com?

How about Google.ca?

Is there even a difference?

Google is unique among search engines in that it has different interfaces for more than 115 different countries! Many of these countries have multiple language choices for people to use, and some allow users to search only websites that originated in their country. It’s really quite neat.

If you ever find yourself doing a project on, say, the irish potato famine, you could go to Google Ireland, and search only the pages from Ireland. That way you might get a more authentic perspective.

If you want to know which countries or languages Google operates in, check out this link: http://c.asselin.free.fr/french/googleworldwide.htm

The Latest in Neat Websites

Posted by liz on March 29, 2008

Well, the latest issue of VOYA (Voices of Youth Advocates) online is out, and with it comes some pretty neat websites that you definitely want to check out!
But the greatest thing about this issue is that our library’s teen blog, this VERY PAGE, had the spotlight shone on it in the “Kudos for Library Teen Sites” section of VOYA’s web reviews! How cool is that? Check out the article here.

Now, on to the neat websites.

Cool Quizwww.coolquiz.com
This site has a wide variety of trivia, games and puzzles that you can explore and test yourself with. There are sound clip quizzes, where you have to identify the movie the clip comes from, and much, much more.

Escape!uk.download.yahoo.com/ne/fu/dodge.html
This is a simple, but awesome game. You must keep the red block from hitting either the blue blocks or the walls for as long as possible. Try it!

Free Froggerwww.freefrogger.org
If you’ve ever found yourself longing for some more retro games, you can find them here. It’s just good classic fun.

Eight Letters in Search of a Wordeastoftheweb.com/games/Eight1.html
Welcome to the next generation of anagrams. These fun puzzles provide you with a list of letters, and it’s up to you to make as many words as you can, all the while racing against the clock!

Flyff: Fly for Funflyff.gpotato.com
Looking for a new mmorpg with stunning graphics? How about a huge online community? This game might just be fore you! Be wary of its disorganization, however.

FreeRicewww.freerice.com
This has to be one of the most important websites you might ever visit. Just like the name suggests, you get to help donate free rice! How, you may ask? There are a series of vocabulary words, and each correct definition that you choose donates 20 grains of rice. It starts adding up, and before you know it, you’ve fed a lot of hungry people. Feel like slacking off? With this, you can claim to your parents “I’m saving the world!”

TravelPod Traveler IQwww.travelpod.com/traveler-iq/game1
In this 12-level game, payers must find and click on a specified location on a world map. The locations keep getting more difficult, and obscure. This site is not only addictive, but also educational. You can show off to your friends about your newfound brilliance when you can show them where the capital city of Turkmenistan is.

I just this minute got an e-mail from Colleen Nyman of The Real Youth

indicating that TWO spaces for her upcoming Tapping Sweet Success for Teens
For fun and for profit! program have become available for teens who need financial assistance. SO, if you were at the info session last week or saw the posters and wanted to go – but knew you couldn’t afford it – get in touch with her! You might be in luck!
