Youth Park Opening

Fair Entry Fees: ages 12 & under = FREE , Students = $5 , Adults = $8
Competition Age Categories: 12yrs & under , 13 – 15yrs , 16yrs and up
This is an open Competition (not just for local riders)
Registration begins at 1pm for Skateboarders & 3pm for BMXers
Format: The park will be split into 3 sections
* 1. small stairs, pole jam, bank jump (line)
* 2. big stairs, rail & hubbas
* 3. bowl
Riders will be divided into heats and given 8 minutes to jam in each section.
The scores of all three sections will be combined to decide the winners.

I’m very excited to announce the results from the 2010 Liam Garrett Memorial Teen Art Show.

Growing Up Ivy

According to Peggy Dymond Leavey’s blog http://peggydymondleavey.blogspot.com/ , the fictional town of Larkin, Ontario, where much of the action takes place in her new book “Growing Up Ivy”, is loosely based on Prince Edward County. Maybe that’s why I felt so “at home” reading it. Or maybe it was the engaging and creative main character, Ivy Chalmers. The girl lives in the 1930s, when economic times are hard – to say the least – but she makes do despite moving from place to place with her mom and leaving a string of angry landlords behind. Things go off the rails though the day Ivy discovers that her mother has abandoned her in favour of a search for fame and fortune as an actress in New York City. The only advice to her daughter comes in the form of a note telling her to go out and find the paternal grandfather she’s never met.

Two new graphic novels arrived today.

One by Christopher Yost, Pasqual Ferry and Frank D’Armata, is an adaptation of ENDER’S GAME by Orson Scott Card.

Ender has been sent to battle school by his parents. Fighting in real and simulated practice fights reveals his leadership potential when other students start to follow him and take lessons from him. He might even be ready to lead his own army in combat. Oh, and did I mention? Ender is six years old.

Runaways “Pride and Joy” by Brian K. Vaughan is about a group of six teens who eavesdrop on their parents’ annual fund-raising event when they discover that their parents aren’t actually the charitable people they pretend to be. In fact, they’re super villains with major secrets to hide. As it says on the cover, “Together, [the teens] run away from home and straight into the adventure of their lives – vowing to turn the tables on their evil legacy”.

2010 Art Show

We’re hosting our annual Teen Summer Art show at the library. All teens (13-19) are invited to submit artwork to any branch of the County of Prince Edward Public Library for display in the Teen Room at the Picton Branch.
This year, the show is being judged by talented local illustrator Niall Eccles.

We’ll accept art in any media – collage, photography, painting, sculpture, whatever you’re into we’ll display it as long as it’s suitable for display in a public building. For more information, stop by the library, e-mail teenroom@peclibrary.org or facebook “teen room”.
